Robert E. Lee was born on January 19, 1807. Since birth, he seemed destined for military greatness, and secured an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, where he graduated in 1829. In 1831, he married Mary Anna Randolph Custis. Still, with all his military progress, Lee still hadn't set foot on a battlefield. Later on, he progressed in his military career. Because of his reputation as one of America's finest officers, Abraham Lincoln requested for Lee to command federal forces in 1861. However, he declined arguing that he couldn't fight against his own people, and led the newly formed Confederate Army. He then encouraged and fought for the Confederate people of the Civil War, creating many bloody battles.
Sam Houston

Sam Houston was born on March 2, 1793 in Virginia. He spent a lot of time with the Cherokees and moved in with them at age 16. When he was 20 he joined the U.S Army to fight against the British in the war of 1812. There, he earned the rank of lieutenant. Later he studied law in Tennessee and opened a successful legal practice. In 1823, he served two terms in Congress. In 1827 he was reelected governor in Tennessee. Two years later, he was married, but his bride unexpectedly left him. In 1832, Houston moved to Texas, and applied for a large grant. He quickly became involved in Texas politics. He became a delegate to the Convention of 1832, and a general in the Texas Revolution. Then, he served two terms as president of Texas. He strongly discouraged secession for Texas since they had worked so hard to join the Union. When Texas seceded from the United States, he was so upset that he refused to take the Confederate oath, and lost his position. He moved to Huntsville and became sick in 1863 with pneumonia.
Milton M. Holland

Milton M. Holland was a freed slave who was born in Texas and educated in Ohio. He was a Union sergeant who was awarded the U.S. Medal of Honor for his leadership during the Civil War. He was one of 47 African American Texans who served the Union army.

Jefferson Davis was born in Kentucky in 1807. He was the first and only president of the Confederacy. In 1861, he left the U.S. Senate to help Southern States secede. He was well admired in the South and encouraged them.

George Pickett was born in Richmond, Virginia in 1825. He was a West Point graduate that joined the Confederacy after Virginia seceded. Major General George Pickett was famous for leading the ill-fated "Pickett's charge" at Gettysburg. He and his men were defeated at Gettysburg with a staggering amount of deaths.
